What a GIF really contains
A GIF is a sequence of images sharing one palette of at most 256 colours, with a single transparent palette entry rather than a real alpha channel. That is why flat cartoons and screen recordings survive the format and photographs come out banded: there are simply not enough colours. A browser decodes the first frame like any other picture, and that is what this tool encodes.
Choose PNG to keep the decoded pixels and the transparency exactly, at the cost of a heavier file; WEBP to keep alpha in a much smaller container; or JPG where the destination demands it and you accept flattened transparency plus a second lossy step. Animation is dropped in all three cases — the frames are not rebuilt into an animated WEBP or a video here, so the output is a single still.

Can I convert an animated GIF and keep the animation?
Not here: only the first frame is read, and every output is one still image. To keep motion, re-encode the GIF as an animated WEBP, an MP4 or a video in a tool built for animation; this page is for pulling a single frame out.
Why do the colours look banded or flat?
A GIF may hold only 256 colours and often dithers the gaps, so the still inherits that limit along with any dither pattern. PNG and WEBP store what the file actually contains — they cannot restore colours that were never there.
Which output holds up best for a transparent GIF?
PNG, because it stores the decoded pixels and the transparent areas without another compression step. WEBP is the better pick when the still is going on a web page and must stay light, while JPG paints transparency with the background colour.
How big can the input be, and what happens to it?
Up to 64 MB per file, each converted separately. The GIF is decoded and re-encoded inside your browser tab, so the original never leaves your machine and the tool keeps working with no connection once the page has loaded.
